Janna M. Sweenie, who was born Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and educated at the Iowa School for the Deaf, has been teaching American Sign Language for over thirty years. She is the co-founder of the ASL program at the City University of New York’s School of Professional Studies (CUNY-SPS) and, for the past 16 years, she has been teaching ASL levels 1-4 at New York University. Other ASL teaching credits include LaGuardia Community College (CUNY), Montclair State University, The College of New Rochelle, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn, the Hotel Macklowe and online at HardcoreASL.com. Janna also educates emergency first responders at sosASL.com. Her first book, Hand Jive: American Sign Language for Real Life, was written with David W. Boles and published by Barnes and Noble. Her second book, Picture Yourself Learning American Sign Language, was also written with David W. Boles and published by Thomson/Cengage. Janna is a rehabilitation counselor for the Deaf for the State of New York in Queens, and she holds an M.A. in Deafness Rehabilitation from New York University and an SCPI “Superior Plus” rating in ASL from the Lexington Center in New York City.
David W. Boles, MFA
David W. Boles has an MFA from Columbia University in the City of New York and has been teaching professionally for over 20 years. He co-founded the American Sign Language program at the City University of New York’s School of Professional Studies (CUNY-SPS). Other teaching credits include ASL at NYU and at the College of New Rochelle; Public Health in the Masters program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a visiting Professorship in the University of California-Davis Program in Sports Medicine. He wrote and directed -- “Drama of the Body: A Performance for the Deaf” -- for Deaf children in Northern New Jersey while an instructor in the Rutgers-Newark Department of Theatre and Music. Scholarly writing about ASL includes “The Deaf Student’s Guide to NYU” and books co-written with Janna M. Sweenie -- “Hand Jive” published by Barnes and Noble’s Metro Books and “Picture Yourself Learning ASL” published by Thomson/Cengage -- along with multiple articles on the Deaf and Deaf culture for 14 online publications. David is also the creator of the Hardcore ASL (HardcoreASL.com) online learning portal -- one of the first “pure ASL” internet teaching and tutoring programs; and SOS ASL (sosASL.com), an online translation service that facilities urgent communication between the Deaf and Emergency First Responders. David was also an interpreter for the Deaf for the NYPD in the Bronx.
